About the Course This course is designed to give the new or inexperienced teacher of English as a foreign language a good foundation of tried-and-tested ideas and techniques which can be applied instantly in real teaching conditions, or, which can be further developed and refined by the teacher becoming, in time, a solid repertoire for any EFL situation. About the units The course is divided into the following units: Unit 1 - Basic Listening Skills The unit explains the importance of teaching your EFL students how to listen. It demonstrates simple techniques which work Unit 2 – Spoken English This unit shows the inexperienced teacher how to present new language to students There are many examples of techniques used in demonstrating and practising various language points using only English not the students’ own (first) language. Unit 3a – Basic Literacy/Reading This unit introduces how to teach reading. This is not a task to be started until materials are chosen. We have included examples which can be adapted to suit each teacher’s situation. Unit 3b - Basic Literacy Letter formation/Learning to write English This unit shows how to introduce and expand on correct letter formation. Unit 4 – Reading Skills This unit shows how to teach reading to students who have some basic literacy skills. Unit 5 – Writing Skills This unit demonstrates how to use simple yet meaningful exercises to improve the literacy level of students who are mastering the basics of written English and are ready to tackle slightly more difficult written tasks. These tasks are structured and controlled by the teacher. Unit 6 – Lesson Planning This unit will help in the planning and delivery of a lesson. It includes a specimen lesson plan and a blank one to aid you in developing your own lessons. Unit 7 – Visual Aids This unit explains what visual aids are and how to use them effectively in the language classroom. It is a basic source of materials, techniques and procedures to be used in English language teaching. Unit 8 – Games and Activities This unit will suggest suitable games and activities to use in a class situation. It will indicate if resources are required and the number of students who can be involved. It also shows how a lesson can be fun without having to purchase expensive materials. Unit 9 - Developing Oral Skills In this unit the inexperienced teacher will learn how to select language items to be taught and how to organise a class so that each student gets meaningful oral practice. Unit 10 - Developing Listening Skills In this unit the teacher will be shown how to use a range of recorded materials demonstrating authentic English speech in order to improve their students’ listening skills Unit 11 - Developing Writing Skills This unit will allow the teacher to use different methods to develop written English. Unit 12 – Mixed Ability Classes This unit will show how to teach one lesson and develop worksheets or exercises at different levels to allow for the varying abilities of students to be found in classes. Who is it suitable for? It is meant for the inexperienced and/or untrained teacher who has few resources except his/her own voice. It is suitable for teachers of students who are beginning to learn English Who is it not suitable for? It is not meant for highly qualified or very experienced teachers of English.
